Casa Roja is a unique off-the-grid property near everything you want to do on your Osa vacation! This historic casa with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Sierpe River has been perched above the Boca del Rio Sierpe for over 70 years. Recently restored, the casa is a 45 minutes boat ride downriver from Sierpe and includes river and ocean beach frontage for secluded sun bathing, swimming, fishing, kayaking, or just plain relaxing.

The space

Location location location! At the northern tip of the undeveloped Osa Peninsula, Casa Roja is a remote beachfront experience in the heart one of the most biologically diverse rainforests on earth. Corcovado National Park and Cano Island, two of Costa Rica’s most important natural resources, are readily accessible by private boat.

Your stay includes private boat transport in the river and a host to schedule numerous excursions for you. We also provide meals and recreational equipment to help you enjoy the boca beach environment. We book Corcovado, Canos Island, and fishing tours with local tour operators for you, at an extra cost. We receive nothing in return from tour operators other than our continued business if our guests are happy.

The house consists or two bedrooms, each with its own complete modern bath with rain showers, a loft that can sleep 3 kids, and an additional large half bath. The front bedroom faces the river and ocean and has one queen bed. The room facing the bay and jungle has a king bed and a daybed. Although the bedrooms are completely screened, the kitchen, bar, and living area have a floor to ceiling retractable screens that can be opened or closed depending on season, bug status, and personal preference.

Most things you need are provide for you, including sunscreen, insect repellent, toiletries, boots for jungle hikes, binoculars, spotting scopes, local wildlife identification books, beach towels, backpacks, walking sticks, umbrellas, ponchos, reusable water bottles, laundry facilities, fishing equipment, surf boards, kayaks, paddle boards, life-jackets, meals, snacks, beer, wine alcohol.

Casa Roja is a research lodge with all the modern luxuries, but the characteristics that make it an idea field research location also require guests to be attentive to their surroundings and safety at all times, be in good health and able to climb steps and walk on trails and uneven surfaces.

Our pricing reflects our exclusive location and the level of amenities and services we provide. Please understand the tourism industry in Costa Rica is tip-based and but expect excellent service throughout the industry.

Our minimum recommended stay is 5 nights, but we are flexible depending on time of year, with low season rates beginning at $800/night for two people and peak season is $1,000/night for 2 people. Each additional guest is $100 per night. A Costa Rican lodging tax of 13% will be added to the price of your stay.

Lunch and dinner service are provided and the refrigerator is also stocked and guests can cook as they wish. Eggs, granola, yogurt, fresh fruit, coffee, tea etc are provided for guests to enjoy for breakfast.

We pick you up at Las Vegas Bar and Restaurant in Sierpe, a small town about 4-5 hours drive from the San Jose airport. The easiest way to get to Sierpe is by private shuttle, which we can book for you through a local independent business owners.

We arrange tours to Corcovado and Canos Island for our guests. Private full day tours including boat, captain, first mate, ecoguide, park permits, and lunch costs about $800. Factors such as number of people, time of year, and time of booking can influence the price. We get the best rate we can at the time and don’t add fees/charges/commission. We can arrange dive trips to Canos Island for $800 as well. Fishing tours to waters surrounding Canos Island are $600. Ocean tour for nearshore fishing, nearshore snorkeling, whale watching, tour of Drake Bay is $300. Esteral Azul wildlife tour is $200 and mangrove/sloth/crocodile tour is $200. All of the tours are private and include ecoguide, boat, captain, food, water.

Guest access

Guests have access to the house, laundry facilities, jungle property, remote river and ocean beaches, Isla Violin and all of the Osa Peninsula. Casa Roja is at the mouth of the Sierpe River in a remote roadless area. A boat and host are provided to arrange hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, all kinds of tours and activities.

Guests are allowed to use all of our recreational equipment, including fishing tackle. There are many options available for fishermen, whether beginner or advanced. We fish the Sierpe River and bay behind the house by boat for snapper and rooster fish using poppers, flies, and bait. Fishing in the river and ocean in front of the house is also productive, and you can use traditional fishing gear or we will show you the local “hand-line” method. Snook, snapper, and barracuda are the most frequent species caught in front of the house. From the boat we also fish near the rocks in the ocean surrounding the boca for rooster fish, snapper, and bottom fish. For more serious fishermen we go farther offshore for dorado, tuna, mackerel, barracuda, etc.

Other things to note

This property is remote rainforest jungle so please be aware of the potential to encounter bugs, snakes, crocodiles, ocean tides, river currents, rain, sun, and heat and humidity. Guests are asked to be alert and responsible for their safety at all times.
